En 1992 se lanzó al mercado el primer teléfono inteligente de la historia, el IBM Simón Personal Comunicator , este dispositivo combinaba las funciones de un teléfono móvil con las de una computadora.
El IBM Simón contaba con una pantalla táctil, permitiendo a los usuarios interactuar con el dispositivo mediante toques. Así mismo permitía enviar y recibir correos electrónicos, contenía una agenda para organizar citas y eventos, permitía conectarse a una computadora mediante un cable.
